CBM India Trust launched its pilot project, Prathiskandhan Samuday or Resilient Community, as part of its Disability-inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) initiative in the Tehri Gharwal of Uttarakhand. The project aligns with the overall objective of strengthening communities’ resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters. Through the Community Based Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (CBIDRR) approach, CBM hopes to enhance the strength of communities in Tehri, Uttarakhand, against future calamities.

Karuna Social Service Society (KSSS) and CBM India conducted regular meetings, seminars, and training for interested members in the region, focussing on building resilient and sustainable communities. One of the interested members of the group was Mr. Jaydeep Singh, who experiences locomotor disabilities. The ideas about livelihood opportunities motivated him to attend the meetings. After attending the livelihood basket assessment, he was introduced to the small-scale food processing mill. Jaydeep believed that living with disabilities and earning money for his family could serve as an example to others with disabilities who have lost the courage to work for a better future. “This will help change people’s mindsets toward such livelihood programmes and give confidence to people with disabilities to break stereotypes and earn,” he said.

From the training, Jaydeep learned how to load raw materials into the machine, how the grinding process turns the materials into a fine powdered product, and how to remove the powdered masala from the machine. After that, he was instructed on the packaging of the powdered masala and its delivery. With a new zeal to achieve something in life, Jaydeep is happy for what is to come.
